The rapid development of LG's latest flagship phone is a sign of the company's attempt to recover from last year's stumble and change its product mix to smartphones more quickly than many of its rivals. The company forecast shipping 80 million cellphones this year, down about 9%, but aimed for about 44% of them to be smartphones, up from 23% in 2010. Smartphones amounted to 35% of LG's overall shipments in the first quarter.
LG's new phone has the same 4.7-inch liquid-crystal display as the earlier version. But the new phone has a more advanced processor, a larger battery and becomes the world's first cellphone to ship with two gigabytes of memory. The Optimus LTE II also has a system-on-a-chip from Qualcomm Inc.which puts the processor on the same chip as the transmission system, consuming less power and extending battery life.
LG said the new phone is priced at 935,000 won, or about $800, in South Korea, though cellular operators will offer it at subsidized prices. The phone will have 16 gigabytes of built-in data storage and an expansion slot for up to 32 gigabytes in removable storage, LG said
