Minicomputers,What is Minicomputers



A mini computer  is a medium sized computer. Its computing power lies between that of a  microcomputer and a mainframe computer. These machines are also called “minis” for short. Some examples are :


  • IBM 36
  • HP 9000
  • DRS 6000 etc




The essential characteristics of a minicomputers are:


  • Bigger in size than PCs
  • More than one user ( usually 10 to 60 users)
  • Difficult to use
  • More computing power than PCs
  • Commonly used by medium sized business organizations, colleges, libraries, and banks
