Computer Crime

What is Computer Crime?

"Computer Crime is any violations of criminals law that involve a knowledge of computer technology for their perpetration,investigation, or prosecution."  Defined by U.S Department of Justice

Example of Computer Crime:

Computer as Targets of Crime:

  • Knowingly accessing a protected computer to commit fraud
  • Accessing a computer system without authority
  • Breaching the confidentiality of protected computerized data
  • intentionally accessing a protected computer and causing damage, negligently or deliberatly
  • Knowingly transmitting a program, program code, or command that intentionally causes damage to a protected computer.
  • Threatening to cause damage to a protected computer

Computer as Instruments of Crime:

  • Schemes to defraud
  • Using email for threat or harassment
  • Intentionally attempting to intercept electronic communication
  • Illegally accessing stored electronic communications, including e-mail and voice mail
  • Transmitting or possessing child pornography using a  computer
  • Theft of trade secrets
  • Unauthorized coping software or copyrighted intellectual property, such as articles,books,music and video
